The Garmin Forerunner 170 is a GPS running watch featuring a bright 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen and versatile training and health tracking tools. The watch measures heart rate from the wrist, tracks pace and distance, and offers advanced features such as training readiness, training status, HRV monitoring, and a barometric altimeter. Garmin Pay contactless payment works directly from the wrist. Battery life lasts up to 10 days in smartwatch mode and up to 20 hours in GPS mode.

Training and Recovery

The watch suggests daily workouts that adapt based on performance and recovery. Suggestions also include run-walk workouts. Garmin Coach training plans help prepare for events or improve fitness – plans are available for beginners with lower training volumes as well as for more experienced runners. Training readiness indicates whether the body is ready for a demanding effort, and training status tracks training effectiveness.

Health and Recovery Monitoring

HRV mode monitors the intervals between consecutive heartbeats during sleep and provides recovery insights. The morning summary shows sleep quality, recovery, HRV status, and the day’s calendar upon waking. Health status detects changes in health data values that may indicate unusual strain. The recovery time estimate tells how long to rest before the next demanding workout.

Running Dynamics and Running Power from the Wrist

The Forerunner 170 measures running dynamics directly from the wrist without a separate sensor. Metrics tracked include cadence, stride length, and ground contact time. Wrist-measured running power shows how much power is applied to the ground and helps manage training load. The barometric altimeter tracks elevation changes during workouts.

Training Tools

Acute load compares recent training load to the target range. The quick workout feature allows creating a running workout directly on the watch based on desired duration and intensity. Garmin Cycling Coach also provides coaching support for cycling. There are over 80 built-in sport profiles, including cycling, swimming, and strength training.

Safety, Payments, and Notifications

If the watch detects an incident, it can send a message and location to an emergency contact. Messages can also be sent manually. Garmin Pay contactless payment enables payments directly from the wrist. The watch displays emails, text messages, and other notifications when connected to a phone.
