Laowa 24mm f/14 2X Macro Probe Canon RF (Standard). Described as “odd yet ingenious,” the Venus Optics Canon RF mount Laowa 24mm f/14 macro lens is truly unique and designed for close-up photography. This macro lens, distinguished by its long, slender lens barrel, provides a maximum 2:1 magnification ratio with a 1.5-inch minimum focusing distance and a working distance of just 0.8 inches. Even with such a short working distance, the lens is 1.3 inches long, allowing you to position it at a comfortable distance for photographing nearby subjects. Furthermore, the wide-angle lens provides a greater depth of field compared to traditional telephoto macro lenses, allowing for more detail in the background and less isolation of the subject.

Extremely Sharp and Clear Image

The optical design incorporates both extra-low dispersion and extra-high refractive index elements, which help suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations to ensure high clarity, color accuracy, and brightness. Manual focus control allows focusing from 1.5 inches to infinity, and a built-in LED ring light on the front of the lens helps with focusing at close distances. The thin 0.2-inch diameter of the front lens cylinder also provides more opportunities to illuminate subjects from the front. Additionally, the front lens element is waterproof and allows working with objects directly below the water surface or in a dusty or dusty environment.

Construction

The wide-angle lens is designed for full-frame Canon systems with an RF mount, but can also be used with APS-C models, where it will provide a 36mm equivalent focal length. The unique macro lens design provides a greater-than-life-size 2:1 maximum magnification, a minimum 1.5-inch focusing distance, and a mere 0.8-inch working distance.

Magnification and Colors

The long lens barrel helps create a distinct “bug-eye” perspective, and despite the short working distance, the length of the lens barrel provides a comfortable shooting distance for the camera. The 24mm wide-angle focal length provides a greater depth of field and more surrounding detail than traditional telephoto macro lens designs, which typically isolate the subject with a shallow depth of field.

The optical design incorporates two extra-low dispersion elements, which control color fringing and chromatic aberrations to ensure greater clarity and color accuracy. There is also one extra-high refractive index element, which reduces spherical aberrations and distortion to improve brightness and accurate rendering. The thin 0.8-inch front diameter allows for unique “pushed-in” shots, as well as more opportunities to photograph close-ups discreetly. The smaller front diameter also makes it easier to illuminate close subjects from the front.

Work in Any Environment

The front lens element is also waterproof, allowing you to comfortably work directly below the water surface or in a dusty environment. A built-in LED ring light on the front of the lens, powered through a micro-USB port on the cylinder, also provides a little illumination for close subjects to make focusing easier. Designed to be used as a macro close-up lens, the manual focus function also allows focusing to infinity. A seven-blade aperture contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
