Sound cards
Built-in audio is fine until you plug in good headphones or a microphone - that's where a sound card steps in. Internal PCIe cards deliver clean output and low latency in a desktop, while external USB units also serve laptops and put the volume controls within reach. Compare the DAC's bit depth and sample rate, signal-to-noise ratio and the set of inputs and outputs: microphone, line, optical. Musicians should look for ASIO support and a headphone amp that can drive high-impedance models.
