An expansion card adds functionality a motherboard doesn't have out of the box - extra ports, or support for new standards or interfaces. It installs into a free PCIe slot inside the system unit. This category includes cards for adding USB ports, network adapters for a desktop computer, and other specialized boards. When choosing, consider compatibility with your motherboard's slot type and any additional power the manufacturer specifies as required.
